Odisha college polls on Oct 14; violence in two campuses

Even as the schedule for students’ union elections across colleges in Odisha on October 14 was announced today, the unrest that started in the Utkal University campus over cancellation of the students’ union polls spread to other colleges under the university.

Authorities of Marshaghai College in Kendrapara district had to close the college sine die after students went berserk and resorted to vandalism over cancellation of students’ union polls while bombs were hurled and groups of students clashed at Dhamnagar College in Bhadrak college.

Notably, the students ’ union elections in Utkal University and SCS Junior College at Puri have been cancelled due to students’ unrest.

On the other hand, the student union advisory board of Ravenshaw University, Cuttack today overturned its earlier decision and gave the green signal for conduct of students’ union elections. Univerrsity authorities had scrapped the students’ union polls due to pre-poll violence in the campus.

Meanwhile, college-level notification for the students’ union polls on October 14 was published today.

As per the notification issued by the higher education department today, candidates will file nomination papers on October 5 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination is October 6. ‘What I stand for’ meeting will be held on October 13, a day before the polling. The polling for the students’ union elections will be held between 8 am and 2 pm on October 14. Votes will be counted and the results declared the same day. Victorious candidates will take oath on October 15, the notification said.

”The students’ union elections will be held on October 14 and we have directed the institutions to scrap the polls if there is violence in the campus over the students union elections,” Higher Education Minister Pradeep Panigrahi said.
