Mohanty (71) breathed his last in a Hyderabad hospital on Wednesday afternoon and his body was flown into Odisha yesterday. Hundreds of visitors paid their last respects to the departed leader at his Peyton Sahi residence here yesterday and today.

Among those who were present at the cremation today were former PCC chief Niranjan Patnaik, former ministers Jagannath Patnaik and Panchanan Kanungo, senior journalist Rabi Das, BJD MLA Sashi Bhushan Behera and Cuttack City Congress President Mohammed Mukim.

A fearless leader with immense organisational ability, Mohanty was loved by one and all. He began his political career in the pre-independence era braving the bullets of the British government while he was still a student. He was arrested under MISA in 1975 during the Emergency for speaking out against the then Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy even though he was the general secretary of the Youth Congress,

Beyond politics, Mohanty played a pioneering role in bringing Baptists of the state together. He also took active part in the socio-cultural life of the city where he spent almost all his life.
