Odisha cop held for taking bribe to drop ‘attempt to murder’ charge

Baripada: Sachidananda Kissan, SI of Police, Baripada Town Police Station, was yesterday arrested by Odisha Vigilance for demanding and accepting bribe from a person to drop ‘attempt to murder’ charge in a case against the latter.

The police official was caught red-handed by officers of Vigilance Cell, Cuttack for accepting illegal gratification of Rs 5,000 from one Biswajit Sikhar for dropping section 307 of IPC from a case registered at the Balasore Town Police Station against Biswajit under Sections 341, 307, 498-A, 506 of IPC and Dowry Prohibition Act.

As per a release of the Odisha Vigilance, the accused received the bribe money and kept it in his pant pocket. The bribe money was recovered from the possession of Kissan and seized in the presence of witnesses. Hand wash as well as pant pocket wash of Kissan gave positive chemical reaction confirming acceptance of bribe.

His rented residential house located at Basanti colony, Rourkela and Police officers club at Baripada Town Police Station are being searched. Kissan has been arrested and will be forwarded to the Court, the release said.

In this connection, Vigilance Cell P.S. Case No.1 dt.27.2.2018 U/s 7 Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered and is under investigation, the release added.
