Odisha couple attempts suicide as parents reject marriage proposal

Rairangpur: In a bizarre incident, a couple attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a moving goods train near Ghunghupahadi under Rairangpur police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today as the parents of the girl rejected the duo’s marriage proposal.

The couple, identified as Ganesh Devgam of Krenda village and a minor girl of Ghunghupahadi village, were grievously injured and admitted to Rairangpur hospital in a critical condition.

According to reports, both were in a love relationship with each other for a year. Ganesh yesterday went to the girl’s house to seek consent of her parents for their marriage.

However, the marriage proposal was turned down by them due to which the couple today jumped in front a goods train in a bid to end their lives.

Police have started investigation into the incident.
