Odisha court acquits Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda in two cases

Rayagada: The District & Sessions Court of Rayagada today acquitted Odisha Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda in two murder cases.

District & Sessions Judge Biswajit Das acquitted Panda on grounds of lack of evidence on the basis of statements of 14 witnesses, court sources said.

Notably, on July 7 in 2011 at Kajangmadi under Kashipur police limits of the district Maoist rebels had killed former sarpanch Kailash Majhi and another Sashi Majhi by setting them on fire.

Sashi Majhi’s wife and another villager were witnesses to the gruesome incident. Sashi Majhi’s wife and the other villager were produced in the court to identify the killers.

Panda was placed before the duo for identification.

However, the duo failed to identify Panda with the killers.

There are as many as 134 cases against Panda in different police stations across the state.

Till date, he has been acquitted in 13 cases. The Maoist leader was being tried in five cases against him at the Rayagada District & Sessions Court.

After being acquitted in two cases, three more cases remain against him in this court.
