Odisha court reserves verdict on handcuffing of DS brothers

The High Court today concluded the hearing and reserved the verdict on the plea to allow the Odisha police to handcuff the Dhalsamanta brothers during transit under police remand.

The Twin City Commissionerate Police had moved High Court challenging the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court’s verdict which had rejected the petition of investigating officer to handcuff them.

The investigating officer had stated that the Dhalsamanta brothers may be taken outside the state for the purpose of recreation of the murder scene as part of the investigation. In view of this, there is every possibility that the accused persons may escape from the clutches of the police.

The counsel of the DS brothers, however, contested that his clients should not be handcuffed as they have been cooperating in the investigation so far and no unruly behaviour has been displayed by them. Moreover, it would be an act of mental torture for his clients if they are handcuffed.

Meanwhile, the third phase remand of the gangster siblings—Sushant Dhalsamanta and Sushil Dhalsamanta—ended today following which they will be produced before the local court here tomorrow.

With the Twin City Commissionerate Police already on an overdrive to pin those having links with the Dhalsamanta brothers, the investigating officers are likely to seek fresh remand of the duo after the expiry of seven-day remand.
