Odisha court slaps 10-year RI on jilted lover who tried to kill girl student

Kendrapara, June 24:

A court on Odisha’s Kendrapara district today convicted a jilted lover and sentenced him to ten year rigorous imprisonment for attempting to murder a tribal college girl in Kendrapara township area last year.

Sanatan Bhoi (40) was found guilty under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of Indian Penal Code and was awarded ten-year-rigorous imprisonment by District and Sessions Judge, said Bhimsen Bhuyan, the defence counsel in the case.

Kendrapara district and sessions judge B.K. Mohanty pronounced the verdict on the basis of circumstantial evidence and deposition of witnesses. The court also slapped Rs 31,000 penalty on the convict.

The accused Sanatan Bhoi had developed deep obsession towards the tribal girl. It was a one-sided love affair as the victim had thoroughly rejected his romantic advances.

On 24 July (2013) morning while the victim was on the way to college on a bicycle, Bhoi intercepted her and attacked her with a sharp weapon. He ended up chopping off two of her fingers apart from inflicting multiple wounds on various parts of her body. The girl, fortunately, survived the attack.
