Odisha: ‘Crorepati’ Private Secretary to Staff Selection Commission member sent to jail

Bhubaneswar: The Special Vigilance Court rejected the bail plea of Biranchi Narayan Sahoo, the ‘crorepati’ Private Secretary to the Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) member and sent him to jail.

The court sent Biranchi Narayan to a judicial custody of 14 days after rejecting a bail application moved by his counsel.

Yesterday, the Bhubaneswar Vigilance Division arrested Biranchi Narayan, a day after tracing disproportionate assets of more than Rs 3.51 crore.

Three teams of Bhubaneswar vigilance division conducted raids at six different places in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on charges of acquiring assets disproportionate to the known sources of his income.

During the raid, the sleuths recovered cash of Rs 25 lakh, two double-storied buildings at Niladri Vihar, two single storeyed buildings at Bhakti Vihar, 14 plots in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Khordha, one four wheelers, two two-wheelers, insurance deposits worth over Rs 56 lakh, and gold ornaments worth Rs 60 lakh.

The total estimated cost of movable and immovable properties traced during the raid was about Rs 3.79 crore. However, the total cost of disproportionate assets was about Rs 3.51 crore, which is 268 per cent of his known sources of income, the Vigilance said in a statement.

Bank slips indicating huge cash deposits in bank accounts were recovered as well. Recruitment related applicant admit cards and other incriminating documents were also recovered during the searches.

A case has been registered in this connection under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
