Odisha: Cyclone likely in 48 hrs, heavy rainfall on cards

Bhubaneswar: A depression over Bay of Bengal is likely to concentrate into a cyclonic storm during the next 48 hours and trigger heavy rainfall across Odisha from October 9.

“The well marked low pressure area over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 8th October 2018 over eastcentral Bay of Bengal, near latitude 14.0°N and longitude 88.8°E, about 720 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) and 690 km southeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh),” a bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“It is very likely to intensify further into a Deep Depression during next 24 hours and into a Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards towards Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 72 hours,” the bulletin added.

Rainfall Predictions:

October 9- Isolated heavy rainfall likely in Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts.

October 10- Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely to occur over districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore.

October 11- Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely to occur over districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Kandhamal, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak and Balasore.

October 12- Heavy rainfall at isolated places likely to occur over Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts.

Wind warning:

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely to commence along & off along north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts from October 9th afternoon.

It is very likely to increase gradually becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from October 10th evening onwards along & off south Odisha & adjoining districts of north Andhra Pradesh coasts and 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph along & off north Odisha, west Bengal and remaining districts of north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea areas of central Bay of Bengal during 8th to 10th October and north Bay of Bengal during 9th to 11th October.

Distant Cautionary Signal No. DC-I has been hoisted at all ports of Odisha.
