Odisha emerges as key state in CBI probe into sex video upload

Bhubaneswar, May 18:

The CBI, which is investigating the uploading of sex videos on the internet and social media as per the directive of the Supreme Court, is now focusing on Odisha, which has turned out be a key state during the investigation conducted by the central agency so far.

Having already made arrests in two of the nine cases of uploading of sex videos on the internet handed over to it by the apex court, the CBI has now begun probing a third case: the Konark sex scandal in which a group of youths had shot a video of their sexual act with a girl from the area in the Casuarina bushes on the Konark beach and then uploaded it on the internet.

Significantly, all three persons arrested by the CBI during the probe so far are from Odisha though one of them, Kaushik Kuanr, the man who was arrested on Thursday, was operating from Bengaluru.

Before Kuanr, the CBI had arrested Subrat Sahu alias Kalia, a property dealer from Bhubaneswar, on March 23 this year and his associate Debashis Dev (30) alias Bunty from Cuttack on March 30— on the charge of recording a video clip involving Kalia and his receptionist working in his office and then uploading the clip on the internet.

The agency used sophisticated forensic software to track the origins of these video clippings which went viral on social messaging platforms, including WhatsApp.

Given that three of the nine clips given to it have an Odisha connection, the CBI suspects that there is an organised racket in the state behind the circulation of these porn video clippings.

Worryingly, the CBI has found that real people – men, women and even children – and not professional actors feature in the nearly 500 porn video clips seized from Kaushik.

According to sources in the agency, Kaushik was leading a luxurious life though he was a mere car driver by profession.  He was staying in a three-bed room house in the posh area at Whitefield in Bengaluru on a monthly rent of Rs 40,000. He used to earn over lakhs by selling the porn video clippings to porn websites, the sources said.

A native of a village on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Kaushik had left his village two years ago and was staying at one of his relative’s house before moving into his rented flat in Bengaluru, CBI sources said.
