Odisha gang rape victim dies on way to hospital

Sundargarh, Feb 5:

A married woman, who was gang raped and assaulted by three youths on the night of February 1 on the outskirts of Rourkela city in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, died on the way to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla in Sambalpur on Wednesday night.

Sushila Munda (45) and her inebriated husband Birsa Munda (50) had a quarrel at their house at Nayabazar area under Plant site Police Station on the night on February 1. Following the quarrel, Sushila let the house at around 8.15 PM. On the way to Bondamunda,  she was overpowered by three youths who took her to a secluded place and took turns to rape her. When she threatened to inform the police about it, they assaulted her mercilessly and fled the area.

When Sushila did not return to her house, the family members laucnhed a frantic search and found her lying unconscious at the spot the next morning.

The victim was later rushed to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). As her condition began to deteriorate on Wednesday, she was referred to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla, but she died on the way.

Prior to her death, the victim, after regaining conscious at the RGH, had named the two youths— Raju Mukhi (31) and Japani Munda (26) of Nayabazar area— who had raped her. Acting on her information, police later arrested the duo on Tuesday and later nabbed another accused Tudu Gope (26) of Nayabazar on Wednesday night.

Talking to OST, D Rout, Sub Inspector of Plant site police station, said the three accused have been remanded them to judicial custody while the post mortem of the victim would be held today.
