Odisha gears up for Durga puja, 79 platoons police to be deployed in twin city

Bhubaneswar: Aiming to make the upcoming Durga puja hassle free, Commissionerate police will deploy 79 platoons of security forces in twin city of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

The Durga puja celebrations will be held amidst tight security. While 54 platoons of police force will be deployed in Cuttack, 25 platoons will be in place in Bhubaneswar during the festival, said Twin City police commissioner YB Khurania after a preparatory meeting.

Elaborate arrangements will be made to control the vehicular traffic in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The police personnel will be deployed to maintain law and order situation during Durga puja and idol immersion.

Besides, two platoons of CRPF will also be in place to keep vigil on anti social activities during the celebrations.

While Durga puja will be conducted on 172 pandals in the state capital this year, 168 pandals are being ready in silver city Cuttack for worshipping goddess Durga.

Extra vigilance will be kept near puja pandals, where goddess Durga’s idol will be decorated in gold and silver ornaments, to avoid theft.

SOGs to be kept ready for terror strike

Commissionerate police decided to deploy two platoons of SOGs in Cuttack and one platoon in Bhubaneswar as the precautionary measure if the terrorists storm the twin city during puja.

Besides, striking forces, ODRAF and Quick Action Team will keep vigil in two cities. The police forces will be deployed in civil dress in the suspected locations. The temporary outpost will also be opened in different locations in the city during the puja.

CCTVs to be installed in pandals

The Commissionerate police asked all the puja committees of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar to install CCTV cameras on the pandals. The volunteers will be deployed to control the vehicular traffic near the pandals.

Change in traffic rules

Not a single heavy vehicle will be allowed to enter the twin city from Sept 26 till Oct 1 during Durga puja. The heavy vehicles will ply on the NH flyovers. The tourist buses from Puri to Bhubaneswar will reach Baramunda bus stand via Lingipur, Samantarapur, Rajmahal, Sishu Bhawan, Ganganagar and Fire Station. Action will be taken as per law in violation of the rules.

Earlier, Odisha DGP RP Sharma had said that the criminals will be detained under the National Security Act (NSA) to prevent unpleasant situation during the puja.
