Odisha girl Anjana gets Guinness World Records certificate for longest scarf

Barbil: Odisha girl Anjana Tirkey received the Guinness World Records certificate for participating in making the world’s longest crocheted scarf.

Anjana was felicitated by JSPL’s Barbil Unit head Suresha G for the rare feat in a function here recently.

Becoming a part of Mother of India Crochet Queens (MICQ), a Chennai-based group of crochet enthusiasts, mainly housewives, Anjana was among more than 700 women across the country and knitters from Dubai, Poland, Singapore and Hongkong who knitted the world’s longest scarf measuring 14.09 km.

The feat was acknowledged by Guinness World Records.

“I have no words to express how happy am I. It was possible only because of the joint effort of our group and hence the credit goes to everybody and of course my family for supporting me. I will continue to contribute for the good work of my group which aims to help the poor and downtrodden of the society,” said Anjana during the function.

The Guinness World Records had set a benchmark of 4 km. But the group had challenged for something close to 15 km, she said.

The crochet works were completed in three months. Later with the help of volunteers these were stitched in Chennai for the final show, she added.

Anjana is currently working with Barbil business unit of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL).

The products made by the MICQ members are given for charity.

Last January, MICQ had made world’s largest hand crocheted blanket of 11,000 square metre.
