The Odisha government is contemplating conferring university status to two premier engineering colleges of the state in order to ensure greater autonomy and flow of more funds to them.

Employment, Technical Education and Training (ET&T) Department has mooted a proposal to accord university status to College of Engineering and Technology (CET), Bhubaneswar and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT) at Sarang in Dhenkanal district.

“The department is considering giving varsity status to the colleges for flow of adequate fund and grater autonomy. We have directed the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) vice chancellor to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for granting the unitary status. We are expecting the report soon,” said a senior official of ET&T.

The official informed that the decision was taken at a high level meeting chaired by departmental Minister Sanjay Dasburma last month.

In absence of unitary status, the two colleges are losing funds from the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other sources. The technical institutions are also not getting the required autonomy and are completely dependent on BPUT for administrative decisions.

“We are depending on BPUT for every decision. For anything, we have to seek the approval of the vice-chancellor of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology, who operates from the permanent campus in Rourkela,” said a senior professorof CET.

Sarang IGIT is presently offering seven Under Graduate Engineering courses and four Post Graduate engineering courses besides, five Diploma Courses. This is the first government engineering ollege in the state to have accreditation from NBA (AICTE) because of its academic excellence.

CET is running three new PG prgrammes in 2013-14 and two years M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry (in Chemistry Department) are introduced from the current academic year 2014-15. In the current academic year 2014-15, Odisha government introduced nine new PG prgrammes and four numbers of Integrated courses.
