At a meeting organised by the Health department on taking steps for protecting the girl child here today, the government decided to form special squads at the district level for strict monitoring of ultrasound diagnostic clinics and prevent its misuse for sex determination.

The meeting discussed how to prevent misuse of ultra sonography and increase the ratio of the girl child.

“We have taken different steps in the past. Our department‘s central team has conducted raids on several institutions and persons indulging in the unethical practice and has taken action against them. Above everything else, we should launch a campaign against it at the individual level. Then only the ratio is going to improve,” said Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Minister for Health at the end of the meeting speaking to reporters.

“Proper use of ultrasound, early identification of pregnancy and making available all that a mother needs were the issues discussed at the meeting. Measures to strengthen the squads were also discussed. Arrangements have been made for providing additional manpower for forming independent special squads at the district level,” said Roopa Mishra, Director National Health Mission.

The meeting was also attended by members of the PCPNDT Cell, Odisha.
