According to a notification by the Commerce and Transport department, the fare of the ordinary and express buses have been increased by one paisa per kilometre and the fare of the delux and AC deulx buses have been increased by two paisa per kilometre. With this, the fare of the ordinary buses has been increased from 55 paisa to 56 paisa per km, express buses from 58 paisa to 59 paisa, delux buses from 74 paisa to 76 paise and AC delux buses from 95 paisa to 97 paise per km.

It may be mentioned that the state government had announced the implementation of the automatic mechanism for revision of fares on June 4 this year as per the demand of the All Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association.

Under the automatic mechanism system, rise and fall in bus fares would be determined based on the rise and fall of fuel prices.

It may be mentioned here that the Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association has decided to continue with their strike from December 1 after the talks with the state transport department failed yesterday.

The body is protesting against plying of JNNURM buses outside the cities and tax hike.

The association has clarified that the bus fare hike would have no impact on their decision to go on a strike from December 1.

“The bus fare has been increased for the first time after the implementation of the automatic mechanism. After the introduction of the new method, the fares have been reduced five times. The increase and reduction of bus fares depends on automatic mechanism,” said Debendra Sahu, General Secretary of All Odisha Private Bus Owners’ Association.
