Odisha govt mulls changes in engineering, diploma syllabuses

In order to generate more employment opportunities for Odia students, the Odisha government has decided to ring in changes in syllabus for the engineering and diploma courses.

engg collegeWhile the proposed changes. at par with National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), would be effected in engineering and diploma syllabus in the first phase, changes in the syllabus for other courses would be taken up later, official sources said.

Apart from changes in the syllabus, the state government will also look into the development of laboratories, improvement in the eligibility level of the students and introduction of courses as per the requirements of the industries.

Besides, the government has also decided to change the traditional syllabus to meet the demands of the market, the sources added.

A senior official of the Technical Education department said Odisha students are finding it difficult to get company job due to the prevailing syllabus. These companies are not interested to take part in the Nijukti Mela (Job Fair) for recruitment of candidates precisely for this reason, he added.

“In the recent past, Odisha has failed to created top engineers and doctors. Besides, the state which was known for throwing up a number of IAS and IPS officers in the past, is now struggling. Keeping this in mind, the state government has taken a decision for a complete revamp of syllabus,” he added.

While vocational courses have been introduced for students of Class III to IX, for more employment generation, the state government has sought opinions from well-known educationists, experts and institutions in this regard. On the basis of their opinions, the government would announce changes in the syllabus, the sources said.

Chief secretary GC Pati will soon have a high-level review meeting in this connection.
