Odisha govt signs MoU with AAI for new airport at Jharsuguda

Bhubaneswar, July 30:

The Odisha government today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Airport Authority of India for development the proposed airport at Jharsuguda.

The Central government and AAI would invest Rs 180 crore while Odisha government wold provide Rs 75 crore for the second airport in the state.

The MoU was signed by AAI chairman Alok Sinha and special secretary of the state General Administration department Niteen Chandra in the presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

The airport would be developed in two years’ time subject to the condition that the state govt provides the requisite land in time.

According to the MoU, the state government will provide 296.50 acres of land – 118.75 acres immediately – to the AAI free of cost for the development of the airport.

The state has only one airport, the Biju Patnaik International Airport here, at present.

The Jharsuguda airport will provide air connectivity to north and western Odisha.

Chief minister Patnaik said the airport will have a great strategic significance as it is situated amidst a major industrial hub and mineral bearing areas.
