The BJD government in Odisha is steeped in corruption from head to toe, newly appointed Pradesh Congress Committee chief Prasad Harichandan said on formally assuming office at the Congress Bhawan here today, which happens to be the party’s Foundation Day.

Describing Naveen Patnaik’s rule for the last 14-15 years as “thugee governance” (a tainted government), Harichandan said the Congress will take to the streets against the tainted government and will fulfill the expectations of the people of Odisha who feel suffocated under the misrule by the BJD government.

“We are united and will return to power. On this auspicious occasion, I hope that we live up to the expectations of the common man of the state and fulfill their aspirations as well as that of the Congress workers,” said Harichandan adrressing party workers on the occasion.

The Congress, which is known for its infighting and factionalism in the state, tried to project a united look at the coronation of Harichandan.

Many senior leaders of the party, including AICC in-charge of the state B K Hariprasad, deputy in-charge Subhankar Sarkar, former PCC presidents Jayadev Jena and Niranjan Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly and MLA from Balangir Narasingh Mishra, former Kalahandi MP Bhakta Charan Das, former chief minister Giridhari Gamang and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjib Biswal were present during the function.

“It’s not that I have taken charge of the Congress in the state as its leader; it’s a huge responsibility.  We are all united. Congress will return to power as 14-15 years of Naveen Patnaik’s rule has become unbearable for the people of the state. The government is neck deep in corruption and has crossed all limits. From Naveen Patnaik to the BJD’s  panchayat level worker, all are steeped in corruption-from head to toe. They have themselves admitted that their image has been sullied”, said Harichandan addressing the gathering.

Reacting to the new PCC chief’s comments on the state government BJD spokesperson Pratap Dev said; “Its’s nothing new. They are opposing for the heck of opposing. His statement is nothing but a political statement on assuming his new office. He knows very well what kind of love and support people of the state have for Naveen Patnaik and his government. The Congress is no match for the BJD in the state and they know it”.

Former minister Harichandan was appointed as the new PCC president on December 15 by the AICC as a replacement of Jaydev Jena ending months of speculation.
