Out of the 24 cases against Mohanty, he has been cleared in 19 and has received conditional bail on four other cases. With the conditional bail on the last case (sedition charge), he is likely to walk out of the jail soon.

The court, however, has asked him not to leave Berhampur town without due approval from Berhampur court.

He had been arrested on charges of being involved in left wing extremist activities and providing logistics to Maoists.

Mohanty acted twice as an interlocutor between Maoists and the Odisha Government and was instrumental in the release of two Italian tourists Paolo Bususco and Claudio Colangelo in 2012 and also Malkangiri district collector R Vineel Krishna in 2011.
