Hockey star Birendra Lakra gets Biju Patnaik Sports Award

The Odisha government today awarded four distinguished sports personalities with prestigious Biju Patnaik State Award for this year in a glittering function here.

International hockey star Birendra Lakra was awarded with the ‘Outstanding Player of the Year Award’. Lakra received the award which carries a trophy and a cash award of Rs 2 lakh from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Nita Ambani Football Academy coach Nanda Kishore Patnaik was the recipient of ‘Excellent Coach Award’ which carries a trophy and a cash award of Rs 1 lakh.

Besides, veteran basketball player Ashok Kumar Sahu was honoured with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in recognition of his profound contribution to sports and games in the state. Sahu received a trophy and a cash award of Rs 3 lakh.

In addition to this, senior journalist Satish Sharma received ‘Sports Journalist Award’. He received a trophy and a cash award of Rs 50,000.

The Chief Minister also honoured ace sprinters Srabani Nanda and Purnima Hembram with financial rewards at the function organized by the Sports and Youth Affairs department for winning bronze medals at the 21st Asian Athletics Championship held at Wuhan in June this year.
