Odisha to host nat’l symposium on best business practices on Aug 22

In order to implement best practices of various states to improve business environment across the country, the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) and Industry department of the Odisha government will organise a two-day national symposium on ‘Manufacturing and best practices to improve the business administration’ on August 22 at the state capital here.

While Union Minister Commerce & Industry Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the symosium, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik will inaugurate the two-day event and industry secretaries of all the states are expected to attend.

Besides, various big players of industry sector including Tata, L&T, Hindalco and Nalco are expected to attend the event.

“The symposium will deliberate on the best practices adopted by various state governments to improve the business environment and how to implement these across the country,” said Odisha Industry minister Devi Prasad Mishra.

A few Best Practices indentified by DIPP will be presented in the symposium and these include Finance & Tax related compliances, Single Window Clearance System, Infrastructure and Utilities related approvals, Land & Building related approvals, Labor Law related compliances and Environmental clearances, informed Industry secretary Vishal Dev.

Land Related intervention by Gujarat, Single Window Clearance for Industries by Maharashtra and Punjab, Labor Management Solution by Maharashtra, Environmental clearances by Gujarat Pollution Control Board, Integrated and Comprehensive System for managing indirect taxes in Karnataka and other best practices taken up by various state governments will be presented in the symposium.

The best practices in building management of BDA will be presented by Odisha government.

It may be noted here, India has been placed at 134th position in Doing Business Index 2014 by World Bank and IFC, down from 132nd position in 2013. India‘s ranking has remained below those of the neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka (85th), Nepal (105th), Pakistan (110th) and Bangladesh (130th).

India stands at 179 in the ranking of 189 economies on the ease of starting a business. These rankings indicate that India could do more to enhance corporate sector profitability by reducing the costs of doing business and improving institutions.
