Odisha infant dies after taking polio drops

In a shocking incident, an infant in Balabhadrapur village under Ranpur block in Odisha’s Nayagarh district died a few hours after being administered polio drops on Wednesday, reports said.

The child became violently ill reportedly within a couple of hours after being administered the polio drops and was rushed to the CHC Ranpur where doctors declared the child brought dead.

Ten other children who were also administered the polio drops at the same vaccination centre and  admitted to the Community Health Centre at Ranpur for observation were later shifted to district headquarters hospital where  their condition is stated to be stable, hospital sources said.

A medical officer of the district headquarters hospital at Nayagarh claimed the vials containing polio drops were perfectly fine and well within the expiry date.

The real cause behind the death of the infant would be ascertained only after the autopsy report is available, he said, adding, the concerned ANM, driver of the vehicle, which carried the vaccine to the vaccination centre and a male nurse have been suspended following the incident.
