Odisha JEE to conduct medical counselling

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Mar 15:

The Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) will conduct the medical counselling for admission in MBBS and BDS courses this year.

Odisha JEE OJEESources in the OJEE said that the All India Pre-Medical Test would be held on May 3 for which about 37,000 students from Odisha have applied.

It may be mentioned that the Department of Medical Education and Training (DMET) was earlier in charge of medical counselling. However, the state government last year has entrusted the counselling to the OJEE.

According to OJEE chairman Tushar Nath, there will be online medical counselling this year as per the directive of the Supreme Court.

The counselling would be conducted in three phases. If there are surplus seats after the counselling, OJEE would conduct the spot counselling.

The process for online counselling would begin from the third week of June and continue till September-end.

“The online medical counselling would be held on the pattern of engineering counselling. OJEE would make a list of the state rank holders after the results of the examinations are announced. After the rank list is announced, the students would be asked to register their name online after which they would go for choice locking for admission in their preferred institute. The students would later get their documents verified at the respective nodal centres after which allotment of seats would be made.

The counselling would be conducted on the basis of the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI), Odisha Professional Education Act and the reservation policy of the state government.

As the per the number of medical seats available this year in Odisha, there are 250 MBBS seats and 50 BDS seats in the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, 150 MBBS seats each in MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur and VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla, 100 MBBS seats in Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Rourkela and 100 MBBS seats and 100 BDS seats in Hi-Tech Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

“However, the report of the Medical Council of India (MCI) committee would decide whether the admission would be held for 250 or 100 MBBS seats in SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack”, Nath said.

It may be mentioned that MCI had reduced the 150 MBBS seats in SCB Hospital last year due to lack of adequate infrastructure. However, it later reconsidered its decision after the state government in an undertaking had promised the Council to upgrade the infrastructure this year.

Apart from this, admission in the 100 MBBS seats of the Sardar Raja Medical College and Hospital at Jaring has not yet been decided as the case is pending in the court.

MCI had disallowed admission in this medical college last year citing lack of necessary infrastructure.
