Sundargarh, May 12:

In a curious case, a man declared his brother-in-law dead and produced his death certificate to insurance company to dupe it of Rs 10 Lakhs in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

As per sources in the police, the accused, identified as Basudev Rohidas, an agent of Birla Sunlife, had got his brother-in-law (sister’s husband) Lalmani Rohidas to buy an insurance policy for Rs 10 lakh. Basudev deliberately made Lalmani’s wife the nominee of the policy even though his brother-in-law wanted his son Jagat to be made the nominee.

Two years later, he claimed the death of his client to the insurance company office at Sundargarh. He went on to produce a death certificate, which was essential for the company to process the claim, from Rajpur PHC by bribing a doctor there.

Later, he produced other papers in the Insurance office on December 5, 2012 and received the claim of Rs 10 Lakhs from the Insurance Company. He had also arranged another woman and introduced her before Insurance Company as the widow of Lalmani.

The incident came to fore after Lalmani’s son Jagat came to know about the withdrawal of his father’s policy amount. He figured out that Basudev and his wife had taken the original policy bond from Lalmani and had kept it with them and lodged an FIR in Kinjrikela police station recently.

Police have started investigating the case and have registered a case on Monday evening against accused Basudev Rohidas, his wife and the woman who was introduced as widow of Lalmani under IPC section 420, 468,471,120B & 34 of IPC.

Kinjrikela police and Talsara police are now conducting a manhunt to nab them.

“We have registered a case against three persons with connections to this case. The prime accused Basudev Rohidas is on the run now. The names of other two women, including the wife of prime accused Basudev, have not yet been ascertained. We are investigating the case. The trio will be arrested soon,” said B Bag, Sub Inspector of Kinjrikela Police Station of Sundargarh.
