Odisha man gets 10 yrs RI for raping minor

Baripada: A local court in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district Friday sentenced a person to ten years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl.

Additional District & Sessions Judge, Baripada Ajit Kumar Singh sentenced Sanat Behera alias Babu (35)  to ten years rigorous imprisonment (RI) after convicting him of raping a minor.

The court in its sentence has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Sanat in addition to the imprisonment.

The court in its verdict has further stated that in the event of the convict failing to deposit the fine amount he shall have to undergo imprisonment of one more year.

According to details of the case, Sanat, son of Bansidhar Behera of Mandi village under Udala police limits of Mayurbhanj district in the evening of February 28 in 2015 had raped a minor girl of the same village in a shop room by gagging her mouth with a towel.

Sanat had forcibly lifted her from her house while she was sleeping. The victim after returning home had narrated her ordeal to her mother.

Following a written complaint by the victim’s father at Udala police station on March 2, police arrested Sanat under section 376 (2) of the IPC and relevant sections of POCSO Act and forwarded him to court.
