Pratyusha won the byelection from Kandhamal, necessitated by the untimely demise of her husband Hemendra Chandra Singh who represented the constituency earlier, in Ooctober this year defeating Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rudramadhab Ray.

It may be noted that the Odisha High Court had on Dec 15 issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, Election Commission of India and collectors of Kandhamal and Nayagarh districts on the issue of election of the Kandhamal MP, who has been accused of being a foreign national born in Nepal.
