Odisha: Nabarangpur SP accused of torturing cable operator

Nabarangpur: District SP Vivekanand Sharma has been accused of torturing and thrashing a cable operator at the official’s residence.

Levelling the allegations against the police officer, Congress leader and former MP Pradeep Majhi demanded Sharma’s suspension.

According to reports, the cable operator namely Babula Bhatra had gone to the SP’s house for installing a cable connection on November 23. While working near an almirah, Babula was questioned by Sharma, following which the latter allegedly thrashed him.

The official allegedly gave Babula shirt, pant and jacket saying him not to disclose the matter.

Majhi has also released an audio tape featuring conversation between the victim and Papadahandi police station Officer-in-charge Tarique Ahmed, in which the cop is allegedly trying to pressurize Babula to withdraw the case.

The Congress leader has threatened to observe bandh in the district unless the SP apologises for his act by December 4. However, Sharma has refuted the charges levelled against him terming those as baseless.

On the other hand, DGP RP Sharma has directed the concerned DIG to initiate a probe into the matter and submit a report.

The SP was earlier in the news for wrong reasons for allegedly torturing two orderlies engaged at his residence.
