Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Rourkela, May 28:

Students of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Odisha’s Rourkela today withdrew their dharna, which they had been staging for the last three days, after an FIR was filed against the institute’s chief security officer over allegations of sexual exploitation of a female security officer by him.

The FIR, signed by director Sunil Kumar Sarangi, was lodged by the students at the Sector-3 police station here against chief security officer Balaram Champatiray.

Notably, the NIT students had on Wednesday alleged that a woman security officer was sexually harassed by Champatiray. In order to cement their allegations, the students had showed photographs and videos of the incident to media persons. They also staged dharna demanding ouster of the erring official.

Champatiray was suspended from duty on Friday on the basis of preliminary report of a five-member fact finding team formed to probe into the incident. However, the students remained rigid on their demand for an FIR against the chief security officer and continued to stage dharna.

Eventually, the agitating students withdrew their stir today after lodging of FIR against the chief security officer.
