Odisha panchayat polls: Congress candidate list in final stages, says Prasad

Odisha Congress President Prasad Harichandan today said that the candidate list of his party for upcoming panchayat polls is in final stages and will be announced soon.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over the Pradesh Panchayat Election Committee members meeting held at Congress Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, Harichandan added that the final list of names would be made public following the scrutinization.

“Today, we discussed about the candidate selection. Pradesh Panchayat Election Committee today approved the proposals received from the grass root level including the panchayat and block level. It will not be incorrect to say, selection of candidates is in final stages,” said Prasad.

He also reiterated that the party will face the polls united.

“Congress is fully prepared to face the polls. We will start out state-wide poll campaign once the nomination papers are scrutinized. The party will go to the polls united,” he added.

In a rare show of unity, several warring factions of the party — that had been in news for infighting ever since Prasad took over as PCC president — today attended the meeting.

As many as 35 top leaders of the state unit of the party including former PCC Presidents: Niranjan Patnaik and Jayadev Jena, former union minister Kanhu Charan Lenka, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati also attended the meeting among others.

It may be mentioned here that the filing of nomination for the polls are slated to begin tomorrow.

According to the schedule issued by State Election Commission (SEC), nomination papers can be filed till 3 PM of January 17. The papers will be scrutinized at 11 AM on January 18 and the final list of candidates will be released in the afternoon on January 21.
