Odisha Panchayat Polls: Re-polling likely in 25 booths; 77.2% voter turnout in 1st phase

Bhubaneswar: A day after the conclusion of the 1st phase of panchayat polls in Odisha, Rabindra Nath Sahu, Secretary of State Election Commission (SEC), today informed that there are chances of re-polling at as many as 25 booths.

Collectors of four districts have proposed for re-polling at 25 booths where violence marred the election process yesterday. The SEC will review the proposals and take appropriate decision in this regard, the official said.

Highest number of proposals for re-polling has come for 11 booths in Jajpur, followed by 5 booths each in Puri and Bhadrak, and four booths in Dhenkanal.

On the other hand, the SEC today released the final polling percentage of the 1st phase of the panchayat elections.

The voter turnout stood at 77.2%. While Boudh district topped the list with 84.7%, lowest voter turnout was recorded at 64.96% in Ganjam district.

Pollings were held at 22,379 booths for 1,669 panchayats in 71 blocks of the state.

The poll for 13 ward members, 6 sarpanches, three panchayat samiti members and one zilla parishad member was countermanded due to death of contesting candidates.

Notably, the voter turnout in the 2017 panchayat poll was around 78 per cent while there was 76.65 per cent polling in the first phase.
