Odisha pregnant woman carried in sling as ambulance fails to turn up; child dies

Bhawanipatna: Instances of poor ambulance services in remote areas of Odisha are coming to fore unabated with a pregnant woman being carried in a sling by her kin in Kalahandi district as ambulance failed to turn up.

According to reports, Malati Majhi of Kansabundei village under Lanjigarh block in the district complained of labour pain following which her family members called 102-ambulance to carry her to hospital.

However, the ambulance couldn’t reach the village reportedly due to deteriorated road condition.

Finding no other way, Malati’s kin carried her in a sling for around 6 km. She was later taken in a relative’s vehicle to Lanjigarh from where an ambulance carried her to Bhawanipatna hospital.

However, the unborn child died during operation at the hospital as it took place after a delayed period of time.

The condition of the woman was stated to be critical, reports said.

On the other hand, the Block Development Officer (BDO) has ordered a probe into the incident.
