Well-known Odisha-based rights activist Akhand has been conferred with the ‘Human Rights Activist of the year-2014′ award.
He received the award from noted social activist and BJP leader Rubby Yadav at a formal function held at Bengaluru recently.
This award has been instituted by the Council of Media and Satellite Broadcasting (CMSB), a New Delhi based organization working in the field of media ethics and freedom of press.
Akhands’ intervention through the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in a number of cases and issues and the latter’s orders, have forced the government to revise or frame new policy. So far, he has benefited an estimated 6,000 persons by taking up cudgels on their behalf.
Earlier, Akhand has been awarded with Neheru Yuva Kendra Award, Utkal Samaja Award, Dibakar Mansingh Memorial Award, Sarojini Naidu National Award and Kalinga Book Fair Writers’ Award.
