Odisha: Royal Bengal tigress ‘Sundari’ mauls woman to death

Angul: A woman has been mauled to death by Royal Bengal tigress ‘Sundari’ in a village near Satkoia Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Angul district today, locals alleged.

The deceased has been identified as Kailashi Garnayak. Sources said the tigress attacked the woman when she was taking bath in a pond near Hatibari village in the district.

The woman went missing since morning, the locals alleged.

Following this, the villagers searched the woman in and around the village only to find her lifeless body lying in a nearby jungle.

The villagers are angry with the officials of the forest department alleging their inefficiency to capture the wild animal led to such tragic death of the woman.

The villagers claimed the tigress had strayed into their village yesterday, leaving people in fear and panic.

Meanwhile, the forest department officials rushed to the spot to begin inquiry under which circumstances the tigress attacked the woman.

The 27-month-old Royal Bengal tigress, brought from Madhya Pradesh’s Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, was released into the Satkosia Tiger Reserve on August 17 with an aim to increase the population of the big cat in the sanctuary.
