In spite of the heat wave conditions across the state and the resultant demand for power, Odisha made a spectacular achievement of reduction of an average of 460MW during the Earth Hour-2014, thus saving over 4.6 lakh Units of Electricity costing about Rs.18.5 lakh, a release from Earth Hour Odisha Campaign said today.

The Earth Hour 2014 was successfully organized on Saturday evening by ‘Earth Hour – Odisha Campaign’ team consisting of TiE Bhubaneswar Cleantech SIG, Canyon Consultancy, Climate Parliament (Odisha Chapter) and other stakeholders of energy sector of Odisha with the slogan of Switch OFF non-essential light loads during Earth Hour (8:30PM to 9:30PM) and to Switch ON to Renewable Energy as well as to Adopt Energy Efficiency,

The Bhubaneswar Municipality Corporation (BMC) joined the Earth Hour – Odisha Campaign by organizing an awareness rally from AG Square to Raj Bhavan Chowk by switching off the streetlights and switching on solar lights arranged by Crux Power, a Bhubaneswar based solar energy company, during the scheduled Earth Hour period of 8:30PM to 9:30PM on Saturday to mark the occasion and create awareness, the release stated.

World renowned sand sculptor Padma Shree Sudarsan Patnaik who has been the brand ambassador of the Odisha Campaign of Earth Hour since 2013 sculpted a seven feet sand art in Puri toi generate awareness on energy saving and the need to shift to green and renewable energy.

A mass signature campaign was also organized in various universities and colleges, such as, IIT Bhubaneswar; National Law University, Odisha; ITER, Bhubaneswar; AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and Utkal University.

Symbolic buildings of Governor House and Secretariat also observed this Earth Hour.

Other leading institutions who observed Earth Hour were OERC, GRIDCO & OPTCL, OHPC & GEDCOL, CESU, all police stations under Commissionerate Police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack; all Pantha Nivas of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation by switching off their non-essential loads during this period and pledged to adopt renewable energy in the long run, the release said.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF for Nature and is generally held on the last Saturday of March annually asking households and business establishments to turn-off their non-essential lights and other technical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on the climate change front.

The Earth Hour is the hour the world unites in a stand against Global Warming, the press release said.

Great effort to spread public awareness about the energy crisis and teach them how to cut down on energy use! Wonder why the state govt. loves thermal power companies ? They have signed more than two dozen MOUs for coal fired thermal power plants. What about renewables ? Why are they not promoting them ?
