A high-level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Pradip Amat approved the opening of 45 new courts within a distance of 50 KM of the other. The members of a committee comprising Finance Minister, Law minister, Law Secretary and ACS, Finance deliberated on the modalities on setting up of the courts.

Notably, the Odisha High Court had recommended the state government to establish more courts in view of the piling up of the cases in various courts in the state.

‘‘This year, 45 new courts will be opened at different levels. They are- -Family court, Additional District Judge ADJ) court, Judicial Magistrate Fast Track court and Civil Judge (Senior Division) court. The High Court had approved opening of new courts considering the pendency of cases in various courts across the state. Acting on its directive, we have taken the decision to open new courts,’’ Law Secretary Mihir Parida said.

Considering the demography and the tribal population in the state, a decision has been taken to set up more courts after due approval from the High Court. The pendency of cases is high in tribal-dominated Koraput, Kalahandi and other populated areas. More courts will be opened in every block in later phases, he added.

‘‘On the recommendation of full bench of High Court, various courts will be set up in the state. These courts–Junior Division Civil Judge court, Judicial Magistrate Fast Track court, Gram Nyayalaya, Family court, Additional District Judge court—will be set up in various places in the state. The committee today discussed the budgetary provision and other formalities for setting up of the courts,’’ Law Minister Arun Sahoo said.

The High Court had observed that people in the tribal-dominated and inaccessible areas of the state are facing difficulties in commuting to the courts and advised the state government to establish courts in every 50KM distance, he added.
