Odisha: Sevayat of Mukteshwar Temple arrested for assaulting Odissi dancers, video viral

Official sources said two cases have been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the accused produced in court.

Bhubaneswar: A sevayat (priest) of Mukteshwar temple in Bhubaneswar was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abusing a group of Odissi dancers who had gone to the famous shrine to click pictures on Monday. In a disturbing video that has gone viral, the accused Muktikant Batu was seen advancing towards the artistes with a stick while hurling abuses. The clip also showed the accused misbehaving with one of the female dancers.

Sources said a group of Odissi dancers had gone to the 10th-century shrine for a photoshoot when they got into an altercation with the priest. As the spat got uglier, the priest lost his cool and started abusing the artistes in filthy language. When the latter questioned his behaviour, he started attacking them with a stick. As chaos prevailed, police on getting the information, reached the spot and took stock of the situation. The situation was brought under control after a while and the priest arrested.
