Odisha students develop remote patient monitoring device

Five engineering students from Odisha have developed a low-cost biomedical project ‘Smart and Secure Multi-Patient Monitoring System’ to monitor patients remotely for effective health management.

The remote patient monitoring device provides hassle-free data integration with electronic storage devices, which can be accessed by both patients and physicians.

The device records the vital signs, including heart rate, temperature, blood pressure and SpO2 (saturation), on a terminal at the patient’s end called micro controller.

“The monitoring solution enables easy medical support through control area network (CAN) protocol connected to a GSM modem at the caregiver’s end. The data are sent in the form of a message,” one of the developers, Smitarani Nayak said.

“Healthcare professionals can access the vital information remotely which aids in the treatment of a remote patient,” team leader, Sourav Patnaik, hailing from Nabinabag in Khurda, said.

While Sourav is a final year B Tech student, his other associates are Shradhanjali Bal, Sambit Prasad Das and Barsha Baishali Samal.

Besides, we are also developing an android-based software which would help doctors to access the information on the go on their smartphones, Sourav added.

The team took around seven months to develop the project with an expenditure of nearly Rs 15, 000. They developed the device under the guidance of Prof Subhadra Pradhan at a Bhubaneswar-based laboratory NI Innovation System Private Limited.
