The court pronounced the sentence after examining 22 witnesses and their depositions in the case.

Srikant Bage, the minor boy of Icchapur village under Sukinda police limits in Jajpur district, was murdered on February 11, 2010. It was later found that he had been sacrificed.

A couple from Icchapur village had gone to watch opera with their minor son Srikant in their village on the occasion of Jagar Amabasya on February 11, 2010.

Srikant, who had come out of the opera tent to attend nature’s call, was picked up by fake godman Pitamber Gaipei and taken to his mutt in the nearby village of Damodarpur.

After getting Srikant to his mutt, Gaipei beheaded the boy in the most gruesome manner resulting in his death on the spot.

After chopping off Srikant’s head, Gaipei buried his torso in a nearby nullah after packing it in a sack and buried the head of the child near the deity in his mutt after placing it in a pot with a lid.

The matter came to light on February 17 after the parents of Sriant lodged a complaint with the Sukinda police after reconciling to their fate that their child was lost. Gaipei was caught during investigations by the police and was arrested.

“The fake godman was arrested on February 18, 2010 after he was found offering blood of the child to the women of the village telling them that drinking it would make them amar (immortal). The court described the crime as the ‘rarest of rare’,” public prosecutor Kishore Kar told Kanak TV over phone.
