Records are falling like ninepins as the temperature in Odisha has gone up a few notches with each passing day.

It took just 24 hours for Angul, which had recorded the season’s highest temperature in the state at 46.7 degrees yesterday, to erase the mark and set a new record of 47 degrees.

The capital city of Bhubaneswar, which broke a 10-year old record by recording 45 degrees on Sunday, also needed just a day to eclipse the record and set a new high of 45.4 degrees.

Besides Angul, temperature soared beyond 46 degrees in five cities: Jharsuguda (46.4), Sambalpur (46.4), Hirakud (46.6), Bolangir (46.2) and Titlagarh (46.5).

Apart from the six places where temperature went above 46 degrees and Bhubaneswar, there were as many as 11 places where the mercury reached or breached the 40 degree mark. They are: Chandbali (41.9), Cuttack (41.6), Baripada (40), Keonjhar (42.3), Sundargarh (45), Talcher (45.1), Bhawanipatna (45.2), Phulbani (42.4), Malkangiri (43.4), Sonepur (43.9) and Dhenkanal (43.9).

In a release this evening, the local Met office said the severe heat wave conditions would continue till May 31.
