Odisha villagers block road for hours after tipper runs over child

A four-year old child was run over by a tipper  at Gomardih under Lahunipada police station of Sundargarh district in Odisha on Wednesday morning.

After the tragic incident, the locals blocked Lahunnipada main road for about one and half hours demanding compensation for the deceased family and arrest of driver of tipper. Police have launched a manhunt to arrest the driver of the tipper.

Sources said, at around 10.30 am on Wednesday morning, a Tipper (No. OR-14N-1067) had gone to Gomardihi village to unload. While returning from the village, the tipper ran over a small child who had gone to a shop there. The child died on the spot.

The child was identified as Md. Ayam (4), a resident of Gomardih. After the accident, the owner of the tipper went to Lahunipada police station along with the tipper and informed the police about the accident and death of the child. Police seized the tipper.

According to the statement given to the police by the owner of tipper, the driver ran away from the spot. Police, however suspect that the owner was himself driving the tipper at the time of the accident.

After the accident and the death of the child, locals blocked Lahunipada main road demanding compensation for deceased family and the arrest of driver of tipper. Tension prevailed on the spot or about one and half hours. The locals vacated the spot after the family members of the deceased were provided Rs.5000/- from Red Cross. They were also assured that the driver of the tipper would be nabbed soon.

“We are now investigating the case to arrest the driver of tipper,” said  S.K.Meher, Sub Inspector, Lahunipada police station. “We will arrest the driver of the tipper very soon.”Meher added.
