Odisha weightlifter K Ravi Kumar wins gold; sets national record

Vishakhapatnam: Ace weightlifter Katulu Ravi Kumar of Odisha has clinched the gold at the ongoing Senior National Weightlifting Championships, here today.

The 30-year-old Commonwealth gold medalist won in the snatch, clean and jerk men’s 89 kg category by lifting a total of 342 kg weight, thus setting a new national record.

Hailing from Berhampur, Ravi had bagged three gold medals in the 2009 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. He was appointed as DSP in the state police in June 2016.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the Berhampur boy for his new record. In a tweet, the CM said: “Congratulate Odisha’s ace weightlifter Katulu Ravi Kumar for record-breaking gold at the ongoing Senior National Weightlifting Championships in Vishakhapatnam.”
