Odisha woman attempts suicide with three children, all dead

With the appalling case of a woman poisoning self and her two sons in Odisha’s Holy town last Monday still fresh in mind, a mother of three today resorted to similar step as she poisoned her children and herself here.

According to reports, the woman hailing from Dangariguda village in Baragaon under Koshagumuda block in the district poisoned her three minor children, including a son, before attempting suicide by consuming the toxic substance.

The elders of the family spotted blaze coming out of the house following which they rushed inside to find the woman and her children in an unconscious state at around 2 pm.

The persons in comatose were rushed to Koshagumuda Community Health Centre (CHC). While the three children—all below 10– were declared dead on arrival, the woman was admitted to the government-run healthcare facility in a critical condition. The officials of the hospital called a 108 ambulance to shift the woman to district headquarters hospital (DHH). However, she succumbed before the ambulance reached the CHC.

Meanwhile, Koshagumuda police have begun an investigation into the incident.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the woman has consumed poison after poisoning her children–aged eight, six and two. The reason behind the woman taking such extreme step is yet to be ascertained.  We are investigating into the matter,” Koshagumuda IIC Saroj Kumar Upadhyay said.

Sources said the woman’s husband works as a mason in neighbouring Chhattisgarh. He visits his family in frequent intervals and had arrived at his village today.
