Odisha woman, who was set on fire by father-in-law, dies

Bhubaneswar: A woman, who was set on fire by her father-in-law after he allegedly raped her in Rairangpur area of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jamshedpur.

The woman, who had sustained 95 per cent burn injuries after being set ablaze by her father-in-law, succumbed to her injuries late last night.

Notably, Gopal Khemka, the accused, reportedly committed the heinous act on January 12 and was arrested the next day after the father of the victim lodged a complaint at Rairangpur police station, on the basis of which a case has been registered under Sections 498 (A), 506, 307, 376 and 34 of IPC.

As per the allegation of the woman’s father, Khemka raped his daughter-in-law after finding her alone in the house. After committing the crime, he torched her by pouring kerosene over her body.

Her husband was also injured while trying to save her. Both were initially admitted to a hospital in Rairangpur and later shifted to Tata Memorial Hospital in Jamshedpur as their condition deteriorated.

The woman was repeatedly sexually exploited by her father-in-law for the last few months, a police official said. It was also found that the woman had recently disclosed the matter to her husband and also sent a Whatsapp message to her brother, the official added.

The parents of the deceased have alleged that she was married two and a half years ago and ever since she was being physically and mentally exploited by her in-laws.
