Odisha worker who lost hand in maize mill mishap dies

A man in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district, who had lost his right hand and had also sustained grievous injuries in his left hand too while working in a maize processing mill at Chudeipara near his village, succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today at the Koraput district headquarters hospital.

Jugadev Gond of Marapara village under Raighar block of the district was rushed to the district headquarters hospital at Koraput in the evening in a critical condition after he met with the accident. He succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today despite all efforts by the doctors at the district headquarters hospital.

Gond met with the accident yesterday while working at a maize processing mill at Chudeipara near his village Marapara in Raighar block of Nabarangpur district.

Reports said Gond’s right hand got chopped off after getting sucked into the machine. While trying to get his right off the machine, he injured his left hand too.

Meanwhile, Nabarangpur district collector Md. Sadique Alam today constituted a three-member team to conduct an inquiry into the incident. The district administration today provided a sum of Rs 7,000 – Rs 5,000 from the Red Cross and Rs 2,000 under the Harishchandra Yojana -to the family members of the deceased to take care of the expenses on his cremation.

“We have formed a team to conduct an inquiry into the incident, which includes the BDO and DLO. We have provided Rs 7,000 as immediate financial assistance to the family. Only when the inquiry is complete it will be known what circumstances led to the accident. Whether it was a mobile extractor or a processing mill in which the accident had occurred will be known only after the inquiry. It will also reveale whether the mill had proper registration or not. Appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty after the inquiry report is made available,” said Alam.

It may be recalled here that a minor boy Debi Singh Gouda (12), a student of class V had lost his left hand while working in a maize processing mill in Kosagumda block in the same district in November last year.
