Odisha youth dies in Mumbai jail, family alleges murder

Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner hailing from Chhanda village under Marshaghai police limits in Odisha’s Kendrapara district died at Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai yesterday.

The deceased, identified as Batakrushna Swain, was arrested by Mumbai police on March 12 over his alleged involvement in ganja peddling. After rejection of his bail plea by a local court, he was lodged in the jail.

On June 20, his elder brother Rashmi Ranjan met him in the jail and had a conversation with him.

While Rashmi Ranjan was returning Odisha by a train on June 21, he received a telephone call from an official of the jail who informed him about the death of his younger brother and asked him to collect the body.

The family members of Batakrushna have alleged that he was killed by the jail staff. They were not informed about the cause of the death, the kin of the deceased said.
