Odisha youth scales Mount Elbrus in Europe

Bhubaneswar: Odisha-born young mountaineer Nrusingha Charan Sahoo has once again brought laurels for the state and country as he has successfully scaled Mount Elbrus during the 11-day expedition.

Sahoo scaled the highest mountain peak in Russia and Europe which is the tenth most prominent peak in the world.

The 33-year-old ascended on one of the two summits, both of which are dormant volcanic domes, of Elbrus i.e west summit. The west summit is 5,642 metres (18,510 ft).

Sahoo along with other mountaineers from across the globe began their journey and reached the highest point at around 11 am on September 29. They had embarked on the expedition at midnight of the preceding day.

“The conditions were tough and temperature was as low as -35 degree Celsius. We marched ahead braving all odds. It took 11 hours to reach the destination. After reaching the summit, I hoisted the Indian flag,” Nrusingha Charan Sahoo said.

The 11-day mountaineering expedition began on September 22.

Worth mentioning, Sahoo had scaled Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain peak in South Africa – earlier this year in February. Sahu, a resident of Nischitapur village under Balipatna block in Khurda district, had qualified for Kilimanjaro expedition after scaling Stock Kangri, the highest mountain peak in the Stock Range of Himalayas at 6153 metre altitude.

Sahoo will be arriving at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on Wednesday.
