Odisha’s Hirakud Dam gets 33% less water in Dec last year

In a new twist to the ongoing standoff between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over Mahanadi water sharing row, a report by Chief Engineer in Burla to Odisha Water Resources department revealed that Hirakud dam has received 33 percent less water from upper catchment area of Mahanadi river in December last year as compared to the quantum of inflow into the dam in the past decade.

Average 1075.59 mm rain was recorded in the upper catchment area of Mahanadi this year, while the River’s lower basin recorded 1065.47 mm rain. Since the Chhattisgarh government is constructing Samado barrage, Sionarayan barrage, Basantpur barrage, Mironi barrage, Saradihi barrage and Kalma barrage in upper basin of the Mahanadi River, only 0.123 million acre feet water has entered the dam in last December, which is 33% less than 10 years, the chief engineer said in a report.

Notably, 0.367 million acre feet water entered the dam in 2005, while the quantity was 0.195 million acre feet water in 2006, 0.242 million acre feet water in 2007, 0.172 million acre feet water in 2008, 0.123 million acre feet water in 2009, 0.225 million acre feet water in 2010, 0.115 million acre feet water in 2011, 0.129 million acre feet in 2012, 0.212 million acre feet water in 2013, 0.167 million acre feet in 2014 and 0.088 million acre feet water in 2015.
