Odisha’s Jayanti Behera clinches bronze in Asian Para Games

Bhubaneswar: Para athlete from Odisha, Jayanti Behera brought laurels to the state by bagging bronze medal in 200-meter race at the Asian Para Games-2018 being held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Jayanti clinched the third spot by clocking a timing of 27.45 seconds. While the top spot was secured by China’s Li Lu with 25.82 seconds, Wang Yanping of China grabbed the second position with 26.45 seconds.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh for the athlete.

Behera had last year won silver medal in 100-meter race at the Asian Youth Para Games-2017 in Dubai. In the same year, she had clinched gold for India in 400-metre event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland in August.

Similarly, she had won gold medal at the China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship in May, last year.

Worth mentioning, Jayanti’s left hand and waist were burnt in a fire mishap when she was just one-year-old. Hailing from a poor family, she braved all odds to rise to such heights.
