‘Odisha’s Sun Temple to be developed as iconic site’

Bhubaneswar: World-famous Sun Temple in Konark has been included under the country’s list of 19 monuments which will be developed as iconic sites by the Centre. This was informed by Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel while replying to a query asked by BJD MP Sasmit Patra in Rajya Sabha.

The Union Minister further said the Statue of Unity is added to the list of 19 monuments identified for development of world-class infrastructure to attract tourists.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech for 2019-20 fiscal had announced allocations to develop infrastructure at 17 places across the country. However, the Sun Temple in Konark and Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri did not find mention in the Centre’s list. This had created resentment among Odisha people.

Even the Odisha government had presented a demand before the Centre to add the Sun Temple and Shri Jagannath Temple in the Centre’s list of monuments to be developed as iconic sites. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had also demanded the same before the Centre.
